MESSAGE TO THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY
OF THE INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF PEACE MESSENGER CITIES

Sarajevo, 27 October 2009

I am delighted to send greetings to the twenty-second General Assembly of the International Association of Peace Messenger Cities.

Your work at the grassroots level makes a valuable contribution.  By campaigning for cultural, religious and ethnic coexistence and the establishment of trust in post-conflict societies, you are helping to advance our common efforts to create a more stable and prosperous world.

Your efforts are especially important as the global economic crisis continues to unfold, and as millions of people suffer great anxiety at lost jobs and prospects for the future.  By fostering mutual respect among individuals, neighbours and groups, you can strengthen the resilience of whole societies while contributing to a sustainable recovery that benefits all people.

More broadly, you are helping to foster a culture of true peace.

The world has reached a promising juncture for nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament. Last month, the United Nations Security Council held its first-ever summit on this critical issue, generating important momentum toward success at next year’s Review Conference of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.

Just as we cannot rely on governments alone to address the effects of the financial crisis, we also need a broad coalition of individuals and groups to prevent a nuclear nightmare. I am counting on activists and civil society groups everywhere, including participants at your General Assembly, to support the United Nations in its campaign for a nuclear-weapon-free world.

Thank you for your engagement and for your support.  I wish you great success at this Assembly and beyond.
